Description: This research project has examined cognitive factors that characterise adolescents who may or may not be involved in attempted suicide. According to the theory and practice of rational emotive behaviour therapy, irrational beliefs are at the core of emotional disturbance. This theory was tested on a population of 44 adolescents aged between 12 and 18 years who had attempted suicide, contemplated suicide, or who had not contemplated suicide. In brief, statistically significant differences were found on measures of irrational beliefs for self-downing, depression and hopelessness between those young people who had made suicide attempts and those who had at no time contemplated suicide. Statistically significant correlations between self-downing, BDI and BHS were also found.
